ISRO's PSLV-C23 successfully launched, PM Narendra Modi congratulates scientists
Sri hari kota: India's national space agency ISRO on Monday launched five satellites from four countries from the spaceport of Sriharikota in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who witnessed the event.
Addressing the scientists at Sriharikota Space Center, PM Narendra Modi congratulated the scientists for the successfull launch. He said, "I feel specially privileged to witness this event in person".
This is a "global endorsement of India's space capability", said PM after the successful launch of an Indian rocket that carried five foreign satellites. = Filled with pride over PSLV-C23's successful launch, Modi said, "The event fills every Indian's heart with joy and pride".
Praising ISRO, Modi said, "Today, I ask our Space community, to take up the challenge, of developing a SAARC Satellite".
"India has the potential, to be the launch service provider of the world. We must work towards this goal," he added.
Encouraging the young scientists Modi said, "Continued progress in space must remain a national mission. We must keep enhancing our space capabilities".
Further, emphasising on the need for technology,he said, "Technology is central to Development. It touches one and all, and is an important instrument of our national progress".

The launch of rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C23) lifted off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 9.52 am today.
Speaking to ANI, former ISRO chairman Madhvan Nair said, "PSLVC-23 launch will be a major stepping stone towards centering space commerce".
Union Minister of State with Independent Charge for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal extended his gratitude to the team at ISRO for the successful launch of PSLV-C23.

Member of Parliament and former Army chief VK Singh also congtaulated the ISRO scientists.

Besides its main payload of 714 kg weighing French Earth Observation Satellite SPOT-7, PSLV C23 would carry 14 kg AISAT of Germany, NLS7.1 (CAN-X4) & NLS7.2 (CAN-X5) of Canada each weighing 15 kg and the 7 kg VELOX-1 of Singapore.
NLS 7.1 and NLS 7.2 are from the University of Toronto, Institute of Aerospace Studies/ Space Flight Laboratory. Canada. Both payloads would fly in precise formation using differential GPS with centimeter-level accurate position control system.
VELOX-1 from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore is a technology demonstrator for design of image sensor, MEMS-based attitude determination and control system and inter-satellite RF link.
The satellites are being launched under commercial arrangements that Antrix Corporation has entered into with the respective foreign agencies.
India had launched another French satellite - the 712-kg SPOT-6 in 2012. The latest in the SPOT family of satellites is the SPOT-7.

The way you type can be your new password!
London: A software that identifies people based on the way they use their mouse and keyboard could someday eliminate the need for passwords, experts say.
Individuals subconsciously use their mouse and keyboard in predictable ways and these behaviours can reliably identify them, experts believe.
Examples of these actions include how quickly a user selects buttons that pop up on screen, how long they hover over menus, how fast they move the mouse and whether they scroll using the cursor keys, the scroll bar or the mouse wheel.
"We don't need to find behaviours unique to each person on the planet," said Neil Costigan, CEO of Behaviosec in Lulea, Sweden.
"We just need enough of a spread of behaviours to verify that someone is who they say they are. We look at the behaviour to see if it matches that person's previous behaviour," Costigan was quoted as saying by 'New Scientist'.
Companies are already beginning to implement this technology. In the US, IBM is starting to deploy the technique in online security software it sells to banks.
IBM's system monitors behaviour only after a person has logged in using their password. This can prevent a fraudster making transactions, pretending to be an authenticated user who has, for example, gone to make coffee without logging out.
When behaviours are detected that are out of character, the software will ask them to log in again with some extra security questions.
Another software by Biocatch, a firm based in Tel Aviv, Israel, presents people with what it calls subconscious "challenges" that garner distinctive responses.
For instance, the software makes the cursor disappear for a few seconds and the type of mouse motion people use to recover it - clockwise, anticlockwise, large arc, small arc is recorded.
Uri Rivner of Biocatch said that by building a model of how individuals respond to these challenges, and then monitoring actions while banking or shopping online, the software can tell within a few keystrokes if the user is the same person who originally logged in.

‘Observe Ramadan in the true spirit of Islam’
Imams in mosques throughout the Kingdom, including those in Makkah and Madinah, welcomed on Friday the holy month of Ramadan with an immense sense of piety and requested their respective congregation to strictly follow the teachings of the Holy Qur’an during the fasting period.
The Supreme Court in Riyadh called on all Muslims in the Kingdom to sight the crescent of the lunar month of Ramadan on Friday evening. In its announcement, the court requested that whoever spots the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan to report to the nearest court and register his testimony, or report to the authority of the regional governorate.
The General Directorate of Civil Defense warned citizens and residents of the common accidents that occur in the kitchens during the preparation of iftar (meal taken to break the fast).
“The accidents are mainly caused due to high temperatures and the failure to follow proper methods in dealing with the tools to prepare food during the frying process,” spokesman for the Civil Defense Col. Abdullah Al-Orabi Al-Harthy said Friday.
He pointed out that more than 30 percent of fire accidents in houses during Ramadan happen while frying food before the iftar time. He said that during this time, there is an increased power consumption which leads to some electrical outages.
In Makkah, the imam requested worshippers to observe the holy month in the true spirit of a Muslim according to the teachings of the Islamic faith. Ramadan is a month full of happiness and piety for all Muslims, the imam said, pointing out that it’s a month which advocates peace, unity and understanding among Muslims. The Holy Qur’an was first revealed to humanity during the latter part of this month.
In his sermon on Friday, the imam of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah said the holy month provides a good opportunity for Muslims to cultivate healthy habits.
Explaining the values and virtues of the month, he said good deeds performed by Muslims during this month will be richly rewarded by Almighty Allah. “Those who perform good deeds will enter paradise in the hereafter, while those who ignore the tenets of the religion would meet with severe punishments.”
The imam also reminded Muslims to give Zakat (charity) during this month and refrain from all actions abhorred by the religion.
An imam in King Abdullah Mosque in Malaz in Riyadh described Ramadan as the month of charity and requested Muslims to help the needy to alleviate poverty. “Helping the less fortunate is a must during the holy month,” he stressed.
He also requested members of the congregation to cultivate the habit of fasting among their children during this holy month.
An imam in another mosque said that Islam allows the sick to abstain from fasting but he stressed that they have to feed the poor to compensate for the days they don’t fast.
Pregnant and lactating mothers can refrain from fasting but they have to cover the lost days when they return to normal.
“The month is an ideal opportunity for people to unlearn bad habits and cultivate healthy behavioral patterns.”
Quoting an Islamic reference, an imam at a mosque in Nasseriyah said: “A day of fasting during this holy month will keep a Muslim away from hell for 70 years. ”
"You must mentally prepare yourselves to perform meritorious work during the holy month of Ramadan which comes once a year,” the imam said.
Emphasizing the importance of fasting, he said : “The fasting person seeks closeness to Allah by avoiding all desires, giving love of Allah precedence over the love for himself.”
"In fasting there are advantages, benefits and attainment of rewards and proximity to the Creator.”
Exhorting Muslims to step up their pious and charitable acts and do deeds that strengthen social and filial ties in the month of Ramadan, he further said that they should vie with each other in obeying the commands of God by doing virtuous deeds and helping others.
"Fasting in Ramadan serves as a shield against evil temptations as the gates of Jahannam (Hell) will be shuttered and the gates of Jannah (Paradise) will be wide open,” he said, adding that it is an opportunity to immerse oneself in worship during the month, which is also an occasion for joy and communal celebrations.

Asian Machine Tool Exhibition (AMTEX-2014), being held in New Delhi from July 25 to 28, will feature an interesting segment wherein artistes who can transform junk metal into works of art can showcase their talent.
Cyril Pereira, organiser of AMTEX-2014, said in a release that the exhibition is open to all. “Scrap metal consists of recyclable materials having significant monetary value, unlike waste,” said a release. Citing examples of works that will be on display, the release said that James Corbett from Australia has used machine tool junk and created a scrap metal tractor. Brian Mock, a master welder, has created the sculpture of a guitar. The exhibition will also showcase a football created out of junk metal, in keeping with the FIFA fever.

Anti-rape lingerie that can shock assaulters to star at President’s event
New Delhi: Lingerie that can protect women from sexual assault by sending off an electric shock to the assailant and knocking him off, is one of the ideas that will be part of ‘innovation scholars in-residence’ programme hosted by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Developed by a 24-year-old aeronautical engineer in Chandigarh, the product will not only act as a deterrent but also make women feel safe in a country where rapes occur every 22 minutes.
The unique garment is embedded with GPS and GMS systems and can send an emergency message to parents and police whenever a woman is attacked, also giving burns to the assaulter.
The 20-day programme will showcase innovations by young minds. The event will give an opportunity to budding artistes, writers and innovators an opportunity to be a part of the life of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The program will be held between July 1 to 20.
Five Foreign Satellites to be Launched by Indian Space Research Organization On 30, June 2014
SRIHARI KOTA: As part of its aspirations to build a regional navigational system equivalent to the Global
Positioning System of the US, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to send its second satellite from Sriharikota today, which would help put in place the Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System.
The second of the seven planned satellites for the system - IRNSS 1B - would be launched at 5.14 pm from the First Launch Pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, where the countdown for the launch was presently proceeding smoothly, ISRO officials said.
The 1,432 kg weighing satellite is being sent on board an XL version of ISRO's workhorse PSLV, as it was done during the IRNSS 1A launch.
This is the sixth time ISRO is using the XL version of the 44.4 metre-tall PSLV.
IRNSS 1B has a mission life of 10 years from the date of the launch.
ISRO needs to launch at least four of the seven satellites to start the operations of the IRNSS. The national space agency has already launched IRNSS 1A, its first satellite on July 1 last year, and it is presently in orbit.
Being developed by India, IRNSS is designed to provide accurate position information service to users in the country as well as the region extending up to 1,500 km from its boundary, which is its primary service area.
IRNSS' applications include terrestrial and marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management.
IRNSS is similar to US' Global Positioning System, Russia's Glonass and Europe's Galileo.
China and Japan have similar systems named Beidou and Japanese Quasi Zenith Satellite System respectively, ISRO officials said.
Two Varanasi girls invent anti-rape jeans for just Rs 250
Varanasi: Two young girls have designed a pair of high-tech jeans to combat India’s invasive rape crisis.
Diksha Pathak, 21, and Anjali Srivastava, 23, hailing from Varanasi designed a pair of pants outfitted with a small electronic button that sends a distress call to the nearest police station when pressed. The signal also acts as a tracker, so that police can rush straight to the victim’s location.
Reportedly, there are already 200 police stations in Varanasi and its surrounding areas, which are capable of receiving the alarm.

Harley creates buzz with electric bike, "hog" fans snort
(Reuters) - Howie Barokas had just ridden his Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited on Highway 50 across the searing Nevada desert when he heard about the company's new electric motorcycle.
He wasn't impressed.
Then again, Harley-Davidson Inc was looking beyond loyal baby boomers like 49-year-old Barokas when it unveiled its first electric prototype bike last Thursday.
More panther than hog, the all-black electric prototype is a far cry from the bulky cruising bikes the Milwaukee-based company has cranked out since 1903.
It is, of course, also missing an exhaust pipe that emits the Harley's distinctive "potato-potato-potato" rumble, but does have a high-pitched sound like a jet plane.
"The guys I'm riding with and I talked about it and none of us would want the bike," Barokas, who runs a Seattle PR firm, said a day after the unveiling of Harley's "Project LiveWire".
The prototype is part of Harley-Davidson's strategy to appeal to younger buyers as well as women.
Earlier this year, the company launched "Street", its most affordable small bike in decades.
John Schaller, owner of the largest Harley-Davidson dealership in Milwaukee, said the electric motorcycle was another move in the right direction for the company.
"The electric bike has created a significant buzz already and (younger) people are excited," he said.
Harley-Davidson's Facebook posting about "Project LiveWire" had attracted nearly 42,000 "likes" as of Tuesday.
Comments were decidedly mixed, ranging from variations of "Booooooooooo..." to "finally, something really different".
Rajesh Sharma, a 31-year-old Harley enthusiast in Bangalore, India, liked the idea, even though no plans have been announced to sell the bike in India - or anywhere else, for that matter.

Tokyo: The new robot guides at a Tokyo museum look so eerily human and speak so smoothly they almost outdo people - almost.
Japanese robotics expert Hiroshi Ishiguro, an Osaka University professor, says they will be useful for research on how people interact with robots and on what differentiates the person from the machine.
"Making androids is about exploring what it means to be human," he told reporters Tuesday, "examining the question of what is emotion, what is awareness, what is thinking."
In a demonstration, the remote-controlled machines moved their pink lips in time to a voice-over, twitched their eyebrows, blinked and swayed their heads from side to side. They stay seated but can move their hands.
In a clear triumph, Kodomoroid read the news without stumbling once and recited complex tongue-twisters glibly.
The robot, designed with a girlish appearance, can use a variety of voices, such as a deep male voice one minute and a squeaky girly voice the next. The speech can be input by text, giving them perfect articulation, according to Ishiguro.
Search for MH370 could take 'decades': Malaysia Airlines
Sydney: The hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane will shift farther south of the most recent suspected crash site in a remote stretch of Indian Ocean, Australian officials said on Thursday.
They also said they were confident that the plane was flying on autopilot when it crashed.
Transport Minister Warren Truss told reporters in Canberra on Thursday that the new search area is based on fresh analysis of existing satellite data from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
The plane vanished during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 with 239 passengers and crew aboard.

Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express derails in Bihar; 4 killed, strong sabotage angle emerges
In yet another railway accident, 11 compartments of Dibrugarh bound Delhi Rajdhani Express derailed at Golden Ganj in Chapra in Bihar. According to initial reports 4 people are feared dead, and eight sustained injuries.
“Train derailed at around 2.15 am, prima facie cause seems to be sabotage. Maoists had announced blockade today,” said Arunendra Kumar, railway official.
The accident happened around 2 am and the railway authorities have set up an enquiry to look for the reasons behind the mishap. Meanwhile relief work is currently is in progress and more relief teams are rushing the spot.Railway board president has announced Rs 2 lakh as compensation for those dead and Rs 1 lakh for the severaly injured and Rs 20,000 for minorly injured people.
Railway minister Sadananda Gowda and Minister of State for Railway Manoj Sinha have rushed to the site along with Railway Board Member Traffic, D P Pandey and Member Mechanical, Alok Johri.
